Last year I had the Night Zookeeper visit both of my buildings via Skype and interact with second grade students. He shared a story about the zoo and facilitated discussions about the magical animals that live there. The kids were very engaged and loved every minute of it.
Once the Night Zookeeper charged the students with the challenge of writing the ending of the zookeeper tale and create a new animal for the zoo that may have helped save the day, they immediately wanted to get started.
We used the resources provided on their website and students began writing and visualising their imaginary animal. These lessons met many of our common core standards for English Language Arts because not only were the students writing, but they were using other reading and writing strategies along with technology. I have already scheduled lessons for this school year, for the Night Zookeeper to visit and share stories about Halloween at the Night Zoo. I can’t wait for the kids to participate!
