Characters With Big Personalities

Jo Neale, Class Teacher, Dorset, UK, @jmpneale

I have used the Night Zookeeper with years 2, 3 and 4. I have loved teaching with it because the project uses fabulous imaginary characters with big personalities. Each chapter of the accompanying story is written using beautiful vocabulary. The story alone makes a great hook for creative writing, but what makes the Night Zookeeper extra special are the many ideas and resources that come with it, that encourage children’s creativity.

Many of the resources I have used as suggested, but they have been easy to adapt across the different year groups and are cross-curricular in many different areas of learning. Night Zookeeper is fun and memorable. The children engage with the story and the characters. In my experience, they love the interaction with the website and the chance to meet and talk with the Night Zookeepers themselves, either in person or through video chat. As a result of the project, their writing has become purposeful, their engagement excitable and their imaginations unstoppable
